Gucci by Frida Giannini Fall/Winter 2008 runway vest. Look #28. Giannini built this collection around the sexy, show-offy core of Gucci's proposition — what critics called "rock chick deluxe" — staging a raid on the Russian, Cossack, and folklore corners of the hippie wardrobe, the kind of printy, shaggy, peasanty pieces London groupies picked up at Portobello Market in the early seventies, scrubbed up to match today's luxury values. Throughout, the collection nodded to hussars and the folk textiles of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, rounded out with heart-shaped neckpieces, fringed hobo bags, and the debut of the "Babushka" carpet bag. One of the most incredible pieces in the archive — Mongolian fur and suede in a striking colorway, with brown leather straps detailed with branded Gucci hardware. The fur builds out a distinct boxy shoulder shape, and the whole thing is warm, soft, and full of texture.
